REGISTER HERE

Members of All Empires History Community,

For the past month or so, myself, Northman and Omar al Hashim have been working on building a new main site for All Empires, to house the article database and magazine. This was necessary, as the old main site (created by Imperator Invictus) was rendered incompatible with new software updates over the years. Instead of using a typical CMS (Content Management System) like before, we have gone for what we believe is a far more functional, user-friendly and interactive setup. For instance, members and guests can now comment on and discuss articles posted. The Library, as it will now be called, will be the home of all of the community's articles, essays and pieces of writing, as well as the portal for the All Empires Magazine. Omar and I are currently in the process of gaining permissions for images, transferring and converting articles to pdf files (for people to print), and investigating a new and better format for the magazine - expect a new issue very soon!

The main site will be headed by a dedicated Editorial Staff. At present this consists of myself (Co-ordinator), Omar (Publisher) and Kevin (Editor), and (drumroll)...

Welcome to the newest additions to the All Empires Editorial Staff:

Parnell

Emperor Barbarossa

Egyptian Goddess

Prince of Zeila

These four, as Editors, will play an important role in developing and operating our new main site.

But it is more than solely the staff who are critical to the success of this new venture of ours - you, the membership, are crucial. Community involvement will be integral to getting The Library kickstarted. When you hop on to The Library, simply register an account (with the same username as the forum, or a pseudonym if you wish). So, jump on and check it out; then if you have any suggestions, ideas, criticisms.etc, simply PM myself or Omar, or post them in this thread!

Remember, The Library is a resource for you, but also by you. Enjoy it, learn from it, and help us in making it part of the most bustling history community on the web - All Empires.

Click:

www.allempires.info - Bookmark it now!

The Library Main Site can also be accessed by clicking on the 'Main Site' or 'Magazine' links at the top of the forum.

Sincerely,

Knights
Omar al Hashim
Northman

Not suprisingly I looked for the one article I had in there. Couldn't find it even with the search function. Unhappy

Incidentally I re-registered with the same user name but a different password. Is that right?

That's alright, gcle.

Omar and I, now with the help of the Editors, are still in the process of uploading articles (there are a few hundred). This would be why yours isn't up yet, but don't worry we are getting there.

That's OK. Ecomic history always has to wait Smile

I have something else I would like to put up sometime, because I'm interested in reactions: it's already on my own site, because it's a spin-off from one of the theatre reviews I write for a magazine here, and I archived it with the others, but I guess that's OK?

Ed: I was going to edit 'ecomic' back to 'economic' but then I thought 'hmmm.....'.

The Library looks like I could spend hours reading in it. Editors and publishers have done a great job.

Good to see the new hires. Thumbs Up

wunderbar! I'm glad we've actually got a system for proper editing of articles now - I may apply to be an editor...

Yes of course we'd be happy to have your work put in The Library gcle - that would be great Smile You can post any pieces of work into "The Desk" in The Library, where it will be formatted and posted in whichever section is most suitable. (Can be your choice, if you wish).

Thanks guys.

The new setup of The Library as the main site for All Emipres, allows for a much higher degree of interactivity. Because of the forum-like structure of the article database, members can post replies to articles, commenting on them and such. We hope this increases the intellectual rigour of our main site, with some good criticism and complementing going on.

So, I strongly encourage you to have a browse through the library, and if you feel so compelled, leave a comment on the articles by members of our community Smile

One thing I would like to work on developing is a 'rating' system, where articles can be rated by guests and members, from 1 to 5 stars. How does this sound?

Congrats on the library.

I would have mixed views about a rating system. Commenting on each others' articles is fine. But overall ratings could be a bit harsh, after all we are not examiners. You don't want to disuade people from sharing their work because they fear a lower rating.

It looks very good but will the name stay the same or will it change?

Agreed: or encourage people just to aim at high ratings. In particular because the contributors cover such a wide range of experience. I'm not suggesting that Alex Bogdanov's breakdown of maths at the cut-the-knot forum ( http://www.cut-the-knot.org/cgi-bin/dcforum/ctkforum.cgi?conf=DCConfID1 ) would be the way to go, but it indicates the problem.

Thanks for voicing your thoughts, both of you. I will push the idea to the side now then, and make way for much more important things, like getting pdf versions of each article (for printing and for the magazine).

Quick update for everyone: The Library now has essentially all of its articles and pieces of work, uploaded! There are over 300 articles covering a diverse range of topics, all contributed by members of the All Empires Community over the years.

In addition, we have some previously unseen, and new articles lined up for the long-awaited return of the magazine. The editorial staff are currently in the process of drafting ideas for the magazine's return - format, theme.etc.

Thank you for your patience whilst The Library has been developed, and continues to be developed! Again, if you are interested in contributing any pieces of work for publishing, don't hesitate to contact any of the editorial staff, or simply post it to "The Desk" in The Library.

Regards,

- Knights -
